Calgary coupled believed to have drowned in Mexico

A Calgary man and woman appear to have drowned in Mexico.

CALGARY — A Calgary man and woman appear to have drowned in Mexico.

It happened in the town of Progresso on the Yucatan peninsula, about 300 kilometres west of Cancun.

The pair was discovered by a fisherman on Sunday.

Oscar Perez, editor of the local paper in Progresso, says police found a passport for the man, who they identified as 72-year-old James Reimer, but they weren’t sure who the woman was.

Calgary police duty inspector Paul Stacey says they got a call from a couple who was visiting Mexico that the couple they were with were missing and presumed drowned.

Perez says police don’t suspect foul play and believe it was an accident.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is handling the matter.
