Calgary police investigate latest allegation of food tampering

CALGARY — Police renewed their warnings for shoppers to take extra care and inspect their purchases after announcing Monday they are investigating new allegations of food tampering at a Calgary grocery store, this time at a Safeway outlet.

Police were called to the store in the city’s southwest Monday afternoon for reports of a metal item being found in a loaf of bread.

They say a shopper had bought the bread Sunday and brought it back Monday.

Earlier this month a Calgary Co-op customer was charged with mischief after pins and sewing needles were found in bread and other products.

Last week, three new cases of tampering were discovered at different Sobeys outlets in south Calgary.

In one instance, a customer found a metal item inside an avocado and two other customers found pieces of metal inside kaiser buns.

In those cases, police said the foreign objects were embedded to the point where they were not visible and could have harmed the consumer.

However, so far no one has actually been injured.

Police have not said if there is any connection linking the various incidents.

After last week’s incidents, Sobeys’ spokesman Mike Lupien said the tampering did not appear widespread, adding daily sweeps had not turned up other contaminated items.

“We’re hoping they’re just isolated incidents, that it’s not leading to anything bigger.”
