Calgary policeman’s son killed while serving with British in Afghanistan

CALGARY — A Calgary police officer’s son died on the weekend while serving with British troops in Afghanistan.

Chief Rick Hanson says in a memo to officers that 20-year-old Samuel Bassett was killed along with four British soldiers in an explosion Sunday.

He is the son of Simon Bassett, who is a constable with the Calgary force.

Hanson says the son visited Calgary last summer and accompanied his father on a ride-along.

He says other officers were moved by “the mutual pride between father and son, both of whom chose a life of service.”

He says all soldiers who have fallen in the line of duty should be remembered, especially on Nov. 11.
