Calgary to hold public hearing on tooth decay versus continued fluoridation

People in Calgary will get a chance to have their say on the issue of whether fluoride should continue to be added to the city’s drinking water.

CALGARY — People in Calgary will get a chance to have their say on the issue of whether fluoride should continue to be added to the city’s drinking water.

A public hearing will be held Jan. 26 to let residents express their opinions on a practice that’s been in place for more than 20 years.

A city committee will make a recommendation following the hearing and a final decision on fluoridation will be made by council.

The city started adding fluoride to the water supply to reduce tooth decay after a plebiscite in 1989.

But a number of councillors are now talking about eliminating use of the chemical because of recent studies that question the safety of fluoride.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he hasn’t decided if a plebiscite would be needed to discontinue fluoridation.
