CALGARY — Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter has increased the number of beds to 50.

It says it was necessary to meet increasing demands by women and children experiencing family violence in Calgary.

The organization says in a news release that the 10 extra beds will accommodate more children who come with their mothers for shelter.

The shelter did renovations to its 15-bedroom facility to increase the beds.

The shelter says the new bedroom configurations and upgraded counselling and common living spaces better meet the needs of women with three or more children who often have a difficult time finding suitable crisis support.

Executive director Lisa Falkowsky says there was a 20 per cent increase in Calgary families with three or more children between 2001 and 2006.
