Canada stays perfect at Women's Under-18 with win over Germany

PREROV, Czech Republic — Taylor Woods and team captain Erin Ambrose each had a goal and an assist Sunday and Canada stayed perfect at the under-18 women’s world championship with a 6-0 win over Germany.

Canada improved to 2-0 and qualified for at least a quarter-final berth at the tournament.

Canada can advance directly to the semifinals by finishing first in Group B with a win over Finland on Tuesday.

Ambrose scored her first world championship goal at 4:25 of the third period, breaking open a close game and giving Canada a 3-0 lead.

“I crept in a little off the point and Meghan Dufault made an incredible pass to me, and I was able to get it upstairs before the goalie reset in front of me,” the defenceman said. “It was a little bit of a sigh of relief.”

Canada dominated the Germans and may have won by a greater margin if not for the stellar play of German goaltender Franziska Albl who made 74 saves, including 29 in the first period.

Canada led just 2-0 after two periods despite outshooting Germany 52-8 before finally getting to Albl with four goals on 28 shots in the final period.

“I think it was a bit of confidence for us as a team too, that we could start putting some pucks in the net, and I think after that we stopped gripping our sticks as tight.”

Laura Stacey, Cydney Roesler, Catherine Dubois and Rebecca Kohler also scored for Canada. Dubois now has four goals in two games.

Elaine Chuli made 18 saves for her first international shutout. She said she found it easy to stay focused despite long periods of inactivity.

“I just kept moving, kept my legs going and kept my head in the game,” Chuli said.

“It’s definitely harder though without getting a lot of action. You don’t get as into the game, but I managed to do that.

“My team played really well in front of me, and I just made sure I controlled my rebounds and didn’t give them any chances.”

Germany (0-2) will face Switzerland (1-1) and will need a win to avoid going to the relegation round.

In other games Sunday, the United States blanked Sweden 7-0, Switzerland beat Finland 5-3 and the Czech Republic shut out Russia 2-0. The U.S. leads Group A with a 2-0.

The Americans and Canadians have met in all four under-18 finals so far.
