Thanks to George Croome for his letter in the Jan. 18 Advocate. It is nice to hear someone else thinks another extension of the review on the chicken policy is a waste of our tax dollars.
If the extension is needed, hopefully the chicken owners will pay for it, not us.
If a family of six only receives four eggs a week, it doesn’t seem like a good venture — it hardly covers the cost of what the chickens eat!
In the wake of the news of H7N9 bird flu cases soaring after the Chinese New Year, I would hope this backyard chicken policy in Red Deer would be cancelled altogether. If this new virus poses a pandemic risk, it could perhaps be greater than any non-human flu virus that has emerged in recent times.
Why are we taking a chance? Stop this before it takes hold and costs more money to stop it. We don’t seem to quarantine humans or animals coming into this country anymore.
So lets take a stand on the H7N9 virus before something serious happens.
Please, I don’t want to see anyone get this flu if it can be prevented. I don’t plan on visiting a chicken in the future.
