Chief stands behind officers

CALGARY — Calgary’s police chief is standing behind his officers after the second shooting of a suspect in three days.

Chief Rick Hanson says police are not unusually stressed or overzealous in their use of force but do work in an increasingly violent environment.

He says the department’s record “speaks for itself.”

On Tuesday night, police responded to a call of a hostage-taking and ended up shooting a man they said was holding a knife in the apartment building.

It came on the heels of an incident Sunday when the police fatally shot Melvin Vanhouwe who was allegedly armed with a sawed-off shotgun outside a Southwood home.
