Chiefs ready for regular season

The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs closed out their Alberta Midget Hockey League preseason schedule on a positive note Sunday at the Arena, downing the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers 5-3.

Josh Tarzwell tallied twice for the winners, who broke a 1-1 tie with three second-period goals. Josh McNeil, Landon Siegle and Kobe Scott notched the other Red Deer goals, while Tyrees Goodrunning and Dayton Playford were each credited with a pair of assists.

Justin Travis made 26 saves in the Chiefs net as the hosts held a 36-29 advantage in shots. Fort Saskatchewan was assesssed five of nine minor penalties.

The Optimist Chiefs’ regular-season opener is Friday versus the visiting Calgary Buffaloes. Game time is 8 p.m.
