City endorses upcoming MMA events

Mixed martial arts fighters will get to duke it out at three sanctioned competitions in Red Deer this year.

Mixed martial arts fighters will get to duke it out at three sanctioned competitions in Red Deer this year.

On Monday, city council endorsed competitions set for May 11, Aug. 25 and Dec. 14. The May and December competitions centre around professional and amateur mixed martial arts, while the August event involves professional and amateur boxing.

The Central Combative Sport Commission is the sanctioning body so it will oversee the events.

Last July, the city’s Governance and Policy committee directed administration to explore what would be involved in setting up a Red Deer commission. This process is underway.

Council decided last October that because there is no Red Deer commission, any events would have to come to council for approval.
