City school buses should be allowed flashing lights

A Red Deer bylaw prohibiting flashing red lights or stop arms on a school bus within city limits should be changed, says a city councillor.

A Red Deer bylaw prohibiting flashing red lights or stop arms on a school bus within city limits should be changed, says a city councillor.

Cindy Jefferies is calling for a motion to amend the bylaw so these safety measures are allowed. She’d like to have staff prepare a report by Nov. 14. Her motion will be voted on by council at the Oct. 17 meeting.

Some residents have told her they’re concerned for their children’s safety.

The provincial Traffic Safety Act allows a municipality to make bylaws to regulate school bus flashing lights within their communities. These same safety measures must be used on Alberta highways and in rural areas.
