Cold Lake a viable municipality, says report

EDMONTON — A report says the city of Cold Lake is a viable municipality and the difficulties it faces are neither unusual nor insurmountable.

EDMONTON — A report says the city of Cold Lake is a viable municipality and the difficulties it faces are neither unusual nor insurmountable.

Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Hector Goudreau said in a news release late Wednesday that the report and its 21 recommendations will provide Cold Lake council and administration with solid guidance.

Goudreau wants Cold Lake to provide him with an update on how it is addressing the recommendations within 90 days, and file a formal report by Dec. 31.

In September 2009, Cold Lake’s city council formally requested the province conduct a study to determine whether the northeastern Alberta municipality should be dissolved into the surrounding Municipal District of Bonnyville.

The province then hired George B. Cluff & Associates to do an external consultant to review Cold Lake’s administration and operations.

Cuff has already met with council and residents in Cold Lake to go over the findings in his report and its recommendations.

The report cost $74,900.
