Red Deer County will get $855,655 from the Alberta government to prevent future flood damage.

Red Deer County will get $855,655 from the Alberta government to prevent future flood damage.

The latest grant from the Flood Recovery and Erosion Control Program follows a $900,910 grant awarded earlier for similar work.

Ric Henderson, the county’s director of community and protective services, said the latest money will go towards “armouring” the banks of the Red Deer River at Range Road 20 about 10 km south of Markerville to prevent erosion.

The other money will be used for the same kind of project at Range Road 40, at the southwestern corner of the county about 30 km west of Bowden.

The work, which will likely mean installing a riprap barrier of rock wrapped in fencing, is expected to take place in the fall.

Minor flooding happened along the range roads last year during the June flood.
