County opts out of Sylvan Lake noise group

A committee studying ways to cut the racket on Sylvan Lake will have to go without a Red Deer County representative.

A committee studying ways to cut the racket on Sylvan Lake will have to go without a Red Deer County representative.

County council opted on Tuesday not to appoint one of its members to the subcommittee of the Sylvan Lake Watershed Stewardship Society, which is taking on the issue of noisy boaters and personal watercraft riders.

Councillors felt since the county already has representatives on the Sylvan Lake Management Committee, there was no need to join the subcommittee named the Sylvan Lake Quiet Enjoyment Initiative.

The management committee also includes representatives from the Town of Sylvan Lake, Lacombe County and the five summer villages around the lake.

The committee has identified the worst noise polluters and discussed ways to tackle the problem.

Now, an action plan is being developed that is expected to recommend bylaws that to target noisy lake users.
