Local creativity will be featured at two special preview events for next month’s Artswalk Festival and the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Awards gala.

A sneak peek at the week-long arts celebration (to be held from June 10 in Red Deer in honour of the June 15 awards gala) will be offered on Wednesday, June 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. at The Hub on Ross.

This “cultural showcase” at The Hub will include art sales, an exhibit of artworks that were inspired by Red Deer’s Ghosts statues and history, and a demonstration by painter Betty Schnell.

As well, the Ross Street Patio will be alive with music.

And Mayor Morris Flewwelling and Red Deer North MLA Mary Anne Jablonski will bring their greetings at 5 p.m.

A kickoff celebration to the June 10 to 15 arts celebration will happen on Monday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at The Hub on Ross.

The whole day of arts and culture events, spearheaded by the Red Deer Arts Council, will include offerings from Bull Skit comedy troupe, the Red Deer Artwalk Festival’s Artists-About-Town, the Central Alberta Refugee Effort, the Sunnybrook Farm Museum, and The Hub.

Quenched Specialty Foods will provide refreshments, and some Alberta musicians will entertain with a blues jam.

A whole week of arts events will follow, with artists providing demonstrations and exhibits, authors conducting readings, and musicians and theatre troupes offering entertainment.
