Critics demand firings over Alberta health report

EDMONTON — Alberta’s Opposition Liberals are demanding Premier Alison Redford fire her health minister over a report on mismanagement in the system.

EDMONTON — Alberta’s Opposition Liberals are demanding Premier Alison Redford fire her health minister over a report on mismanagement in the system.

But Redford notes the report also said there was no evidence to support Liberal Leader Raj Sherman’s allegation that 250 lung surgery patients died.

Redford says Health Minister Fred Horne has made progress in his four months on the job and will not be replaced.

Redford and her Tory government are facing angry questions over the report by the Health Quality Council which found patient suffering and widespread bullying of doctors.

NDP Leader Brian Mason is demanding former health minister Ron Liepert be fired from cabinet, given the report found many of the problems occurred on his watch.

Liepert is now finance minister, and Redford is dismissing calls for his departure.
