Crown’s sentencing arguments focus on diary of Calgary woman who smothered son

The Crown continues to focus on the diary of a Calgary woman who has confessed to killing her infant son.

CALGARY — The Crown continues to focus on the diary of a Calgary woman who has confessed to killing her infant son.

The journal entries by Stacey Joy Bourdeaux address her dead husband, Ted, and admit she smothered the baby boy in 2004.

Bourdeaux has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and the attempted murder of her other son six years later.

The Crown has said in its sentencing arguments that Bourdeaux never wrote that the death was a mistake or an accident.

It was originally ruled accidental but the case was reopened when Bourdeaux’s other son was admitted to hospital with severe brain damage in 2010.

The Crown is asking for an 18-year prison term, while the defence says it should be in the eight-to-10-year range.
