Canadian country music singer Crystal Shawanda will perform Thursday at Cowboys Bar and Nightclub in Red Deer.

Shawanda, whose debut single You Can Let Go climbed the Canadian country charts in 2008, was raised on the Wikwemikong First Nation in Ontario.

Inspired by her childhood hero, Loretta Lynn, Shawanda started writing songs at age nine. She later accompanied her truck driver father on trips to Nashville to watch musicians perform through the window of Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.

Shawanda released her first album at age 12 and used the proceeds to pay for future trips to Nashville to pursue a music career. She was eventually signed by RCA Records, and CMT documented Shawanda’s rise to fame in the six-part series Crystal: Living the Dream.

Tickets to the 9:30 p.m. show, followed by a meet-and-greet at Cowboys, at 4608 50th Ave., are $15 at the door or $10 in advance from the Bell Fever Lounge, 403-342-4027.
