Dangerous offender: man jailed indefinitely for attack on Edmonton bus driver

A man who brutally beat and stomped on an Edmonton bus driver, blinding him in one eye, will be jailed indefinitely.

EDMONTON — A man who brutally beat and stomped on an Edmonton bus driver, blinding him in one eye, will be jailed indefinitely.

Provincial court Judge Harry Bridges has declared Gary Mattson a dangerous offender for the “brutal, senseless” attack.

The designation means Mattson will remain behind bars until experts determine he is no longer a risk.

He pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault of transit driver Tom Bregg on Dec. 3, 2009.

Mattson was drunk when he boarded the bus and argued with Bregg over the $2.50 bus fare.

Mattson punched the driver three times, knocked him unconscious, then threw him out the front door and stomped on his face 15 times.
