A Red Deer Realtor who devotes countless hours to helping victims of domestic violence has been named winner of the Central Alberta Soroptimist Club’s annual Ruby Award.

Darlis Bachusky was on her way home from wrapping Christmas presents at Bower Place Shopping Centre on behalf of the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter on Wednesday when she was told she had been named winner, said club treasurer Sherri Smith.

The award is given annually to a local woman who has made an extraordinary difference in the lives of other women.

Besides the time she offers to the women’s shelter, Bachusky is actively involved in the Royal Lepage Community Foundation, which raises money to help victims of domestic violence.

Past Ruby winners in Central Alberta include Joanne Bucklee, former mayor Gail Surkan and Red Deer North MLA Mary Anne Jablonski.

Bachusky will be honoured during a luncheon tentatively scheduled for the Black Knight Inn in Red Deer on March 8.

Details for the award ceremony are still being worked out.
