Deadline passes to enter Alberta Liberal leadership race

The deadline has passed to enter the race to become Alberta’s next Liberal leader.

EDMONTON — The deadline has passed to enter the race to become Alberta’s next Liberal leader.

There will be five official candidates — three who are currently in politics and two others.

Laurie Blakeman and Hugh MacDonald are Liberal members of the legislature from Edmonton.

Raj Sherman, also from Edmonton, was kicked out of the Conservative caucus last year for criticizing the government’s performance on health care and has been sitting as an Independent.

Rounding out the contest are financial services executive Bill Harvey and political newcomer Bruce Payne — both from Calgary.

The vote to replace David Swann is to be held Sept. 10.
