Delivering the water safety message

Thank you to the Advocate and to Red Deer’s radio and cable TV stations for your outstanding support of Safe Communities of Central Alberta’s Water Safety campaign.

Thank you to the Advocate and to Red Deer’s radio and cable TV stations for your outstanding support of Safe Communities of Central Alberta’s Water Safety campaign.

Prepare, stay safe and survive are the key messages we and our community partners are sharing with those floating and paddling on the Red Deer River.

The Advocate featured several items during the week of Aug. 12 that reinforced those messages, including Bob Scammell’s Udder (stupidity) Awards column, Rick Zemanek’s Insight column and an article on our launch party at Fort Normandeau.

With funding support from the Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research and participation of committee members representing Alberta Health Services, Waskasoo Environmental Education Society, Red Deer County, Transport Canada, Canadian Red Cross and Alberta Transportation, the Safe Communities coalition has distributed 104 life-jackets, 100 whistles and countless waterproof pouches to river users so far this summer, and will continue to share safe floating messages as the season winds down.

Thanks again,

Kathleen Raines
