Doctor panel begins investigation into problems in Alberta hospitals

An investigation has begun into long wait times for care in Alberta’s hospitals.

EDMONTON — An investigation has begun into long wait times for care in Alberta’s hospitals.

Dr. John Cowell of the Health Quality Council says he has received the required letter from Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky (zwahz-DEHS’-key).

Cowell says the review will take anywhere from three to nine months.

Opposition politicians want a full independent inquiry run by a former judge.

They say a wider probe is needed because new evidence suggests doctors have been bullied into keeping quiet about long wait lists.

Cowell says his team has the mandate to look into anything related to wait times, including allegations of doctor intimidation.
