Doug Griffiths announces bid to run for leadership of Alberta Tories

The race to replace Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach now has three candidates.

EDMONTON — The race to replace Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach now has three candidates.

Backbencher Doug Griffiths has announced he will seek the leadership when Stelmach steps down later this year.

Griffiths is from the rural riding of Battle River-Wainwright and has never held a cabinet post, but says he has experience as a three-term legislature member.

Griffiths, who is 38, has resigned as parliamentary secretary in the Finance Ministry.

He says he will fully disclose campaign donations and as premier would not allow the province to again rack up long-term debt.

Former deputy premier Doug Horner and ex-finance minister Ted Morton are also running.
