The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs won two of three starts in Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey Leaguer action during the weekend, but lost the game they wanted to win in their battle for second place in the South Division.

The Chiefs dropped a 3-2 decision to the Highwood Raiders in High River Friday before coming back to down the Bruins 5-2 in Calgary Saturday and the Sherwood Park Fury 9-1 at home Sunday.

The Chiefs and Raiders are tied for second in the south with 39 points. Red Deer has one game remaining — Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Grande Prairie at the Kin City Arenas — while the Raiders have two games left — one against the south leading Calgary Flyers and the other against the north leading Edmonton Thunder.

The top two teams in each division receive a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.

Hannah Mousek and Chelsea Peterson scored for the Chiefs against the Raiders while netminder Camille Trautman made 22 saves.

Peterson exploded for four goals against the Bruins with Rachael Hoppins connecting once. Trautman made 26 saves, then came back to stop 22 shots against Sherwood Park. Olivia Sutter, Jade Petrie and Peterson had two goals each against the Fury with Rebecca Glackin, Hoppins and Mousek potting single markers.

Rustlers roped

The Red Deer Rustlers couldn’t overcome a 3-0 first-period deficit and fell 3-2 to Sherwood Park in junior girls’ hockey league play Saturday. Karley Holt and Melissa Clark scored for the Rustlers while Kelly Giacobbo and Tannis Duffy shared goaltending duties.

The Rustlers play a doubleheader Saturday at the Centrium, facing Fort Saskatchewan at noon and Irma at 4:15 p.m.
