Driver charged after skateboarder hit, injured

At around 10 p.m. police were called out to a collision involving a pedestrian on 49th Avenue and 51st Street in Red Deer.

It is alleged that a pedestrian traveling westbound crossed the street against the light and was struck by a northbound vehicle.

The 19-year-old local skateboarder sustained a fractured skull, collapsed lung, bruised heart and multiple broken bones. He remains in hospital.

Thanks to information received from a concerned citizen on Oct. 6, police tracked down the suspect vehicle which had a considerable amount of damage. The driver turned himself into police two days later.

A 24-year-old Red Deer man has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision causing bodily harm.

He is set to appear in provincial court on Nov. 29.
