An Innisfail-area school bus driver is recovering from injuries after a deer was struck and bounced off a vehicle and hit the windshield of the bus on Tuesday morning.

Allan Tarnoczi, associate superintendent Chinook’s Edge School Division, said the bus driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“That deer was propelled into the air such that it hit the bus at windshield level,” Tarnoczi said on Thursday. “This is an absolutely bizarre accident and it’s very unfortunate. We’re thankful that there were no students on the bus.”

The longtime bus driver was just starting out on his route before 7 a.m. and was on Hwy 590 east of Innisfail when the deer was struck by the vehicle and flew into oncoming bus.

Tarnoczi said the bus driver will be off work for some time recovering from his injuries.

He didn’t know the cost of damage to the windshield and interior of the bus.
