EDMONTON — An Alberta man who went into politics after his wife was brutally murdered by his own brother has switched parties.

Michael Butler ran unsuccessfully for the NDP in the 2008 federal election in the riding of Edmonton Mill Woods - Beaumont.

Butler has now been acclaimed as the Liberal candidate in the riding for the next election.

Butler said he switched parties because the Liberals better reflect his own beliefs.

Butler’s brother, Kenneth, a drug addict, was sentenced last year for second-degree murder in the 2007 beating death of Stephanie Butler.

Following his wife’s death Mike Butler started lobbying politicians for better treatment facilities for drug addicts and for more police on the streets.

Edmonton Mill Woods - Beaumont is now represented by Conservative MP Mike Lake.
