Edmonton Catholic school board to cut 184 positions, still has deficit

The Edmonton Catholic School Board says it will have a $1.8 million deficit for the next school year even with cutting 184 positions.

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Catholic School Board says it will have a $1.8 million deficit for the next school year even with cutting 184 positions.

The board passed the deficit budget Tuesday afternoon and says it has to cut 97 teachers, 63 support staff and 24 custodial positions.

Board chairwoman Debbie Engel says the job cuts take effect at the end of August.

She says classroom sizes will definitely be bigger in September.

Engel says while the province did fund the 4.54 per cent increase for teachers’ salaries, it did not pay for increases for support staff.

She says the Tory government also did not give them any extra money for school maintenance and operations, but those costs continue to go up.
