BOYLE— Alberta RCMP are investigating after someone deliberately set eight wildfires last week along a stretch of Highway 63 south of Fort McMurray.

Police say the fires were ignited Thursday night between Marianna Lake and the House River when conditions in the area ranged from very high to extreme.

Crews put out the fires before they got out of control.

Sgt. Kevin McGillivray says police and provincial officials are treating the fires as suspected arsons and are asking the public’s help to find who is responsible.

Last week, Alberta crews battled more than 50 wildfires in the northern half of the province.

Cool, wet weather this week has reduced the threat from low to moderate with 16 fires burning in Alberta, none out of control.
