EDMONTON — Edmonton Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed surrounded himself with a lot of CFL experience Wednesday.
Reed, less than a month into his first stint as a CFL head coach, hired veteran CFL coaches Rich Stubler, Rick Campbell and Kit Lathrop to his staff.
Stubler will be the club’s defensive co-ordinator while Campbell assumes the role of assistant head coach and special-teams co-ordinator and Lathrop becomes the defensive line coach.
Campbell, a 12-year CFL coaching veteran, returns to the Eskimos after spending last year as the Calgary Stampeders running backs coach. Campbell spent 10 seasons in a variety of capacities with Edmonton before becoming the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive backs and special-teams co-ordinator in 2009.
Stubler is a veteran CFL coach as well, having been part of four Grey Cup-winning squads. He also spent seven seasons as Edmonton’s defensive co-ordinator (1991-’95, ’98-’99) and was the B.C. Lions defensive line coach this past year.
Lathrop joins the Eskimos with plenty of CFL experience, earning a Grey Cup ring in 2000 with the B.C. Lions.
The moves come a day after Reed dismissed special-teams co-ordinator and assistant head coach Noel Thorpe, receivers coach Jason Tucker and defensive backs coach Stacey Hairston.
Braidwood trial adjourned
STONY PLAIN — An aggravated assault case against an Edmonton Eskimos football player has been adjourned to the new year.
Defensive lineman Adam Braidwood also faces a charge of forcible confinement.
The case was put over to Jan. 12 in Stony Plain provincial court.
Braidwood, who is 26, was arrested along with two others after a man was attacked and injured west of Edmonton.
A witness told police he saw some men trying to stuff someone into the trunk of a car.
Braidwood, who started playing with the CFL team in 2006, faces several other charges stemming from a separate incident at his home earlier this month.
He’s due to return to court on those charges Jan. 13.
