GRANDE CACHE— A federal prison in northwestern Alberta has been locked down so guards can search for weapons.

Staff say they began the search of the Grande Cache Institution on Monday night.

The Correctional Service of Canada says all scheduled visits with inmates at the prison have been cancelled.

The lockdown was ordered after staff found material that could be used as weapons.

The facility houses a mix of medium-security and minimum-security inmates.

Grande Cache is about 350 kilometres west of Edmonton.
