Fire guard rebuffs flames in Alberta

OPAL — Officials say a stubborn brush fire burning north of Edmonton for a week is finally being held.

OPAL — Officials say a stubborn brush fire burning north of Edmonton for a week is finally being held.

That means the flames haven’t jumped over a fire guard despite strong winds and high temperatures.

Crews have been fighting to ensure the fire near Opal doesn’t grow beyond the 30 square kilometres it has been for several days.

The plan is to strengthen the guard in case strong winds return and whip up the blaze again.

Residents of seven homes evacuated in Sturgeon County on Tuesday have been allowed to return.

If the fire is held for two straight days, crews will move in on the fire itself to put out hotspots as they go.
