EDMONTON — Smoke from burning furniture forced more than 100 patients from a building at an Edmonton-area psychiatric hospital.

EDMONTON — Smoke from burning furniture forced more than 100 patients from a building at an Edmonton-area psychiatric hospital.

Staff at Alberta Hospital, just north of the city, scrambled to get the patients to safety after the alarm sounded late Sunday night.

No one needed medical help and the patients are being housed in the hospital’s auditorium.

The fire broke out in a sitting room and created a large volume of smoke.

Concerns about air quality in the building where the fire occurred have delayed the return of the patients to their rooms.

The cause of the fire is not known.
