Breanna Beck winces as Kim Courte of Canadian Blood Services inserts a needle into Beck’s arm at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School recently. The first-time blood donor was joined by about 85 of her classmates and teachers at the school as they participated in the seventh annual High School Blood Donor Challenge. Notre Dame held its clinic earlier this week while Hunting Hills High School will have its clinic on May 15. Canadian Blood Services needs 95,000 new donors each year to keep up with demand for blood products. Recruiting high school students is a very effective way to bring in new donors, said LaReina Johnson, community development co-ordinator for Canadian Blood Services. Donors at the Canadian Blood Services offices at Suite 5, 5020 68th St. can also designate their donations in support of a school.
