Football team wins league championship after tragic deaths of four players

An Alberta high school football team that endured the tragic loss of four of its players last month has pulled together to win their league’s championship.

PEACE RIVER, Alta. — An Alberta high school football team that endured the tragic loss of four of its players last month has pulled together to win their league’s championship.

The Grande Prairie Composite High School Warriors defeated the Peace River Pioneers 30-14 on Saturday to take the Mighty Peace Football League title.

Four Warriors were killed on October 22 when police say a pickup truck slammed into their vehicle.

A fifth player for the Warriors was injured in the crash and remains in hospital in Edmonton.

Many fans from Grande Prairie made the trip to watch the championship game on the frozen field in Peace River.

The Warriors advance to the provincial championships next weekend.

Brendan Holubowich faces charges of impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm and flight from police in connection with the crash.

He is due to appear in court again November 28th to face the allegations.
