The Fort Saskatchewan Athletics were the big winners in the Red Deer Stags baseball tournament Sunday, downing the Red Deer Riggers 7-6 in the championship final at Great Chief Park.

The A’s reached the final with an 8-6 win over the host Stags Sunday morning. Jordan Ostrov started on the Stags mound and worked four and one-third solid innings, while Dan Zinger, Chayse Marion, Shaun Connor and Jason Fraser each had two hits in a losing cause.

Kiel Vertz was the winning pitcher, with James Carr taking the loss for the Stags.

In the other semifinal, the Riggers slipped past the St. Albert Tigers 7-6. The Riggers downed the A’s 13-6 in a round-robin game late Saturday.

The Stags return to Sunburst Baseball League action Tuesday at Fort Saskatchewan. The Riggers host the Tigers Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Great Chief.
