Gaetz upgrading will be explained

Red Deerians are invited to learn more about the final upgrading this year along Little Gaetz Avenue in downtown Red Deer.

Red Deerians are invited to learn more about the final upgrading this year along Little Gaetz Avenue in downtown Red Deer.

Before construction starts, two meetings will be held so that anyone with questions can find out what’s occurring along the street that’s being made into a pedestrian-friendly area.

Last year, upgrading began just north of Ross Street to 51st Street. Another block extending south to 48th Street was also worked on.

The revitalization project involves repaving the streets, adding paving stones, old-fashioned street lights, more trees and sidewalk enhancements.

Council approved $4.7 million to complete this project in 2012 rather than 2013 as originally planned. The total cost of the project is pegged at $9 million.

Construction crews will finish off phase one of the project located between 48th and 51st Streets. A meeting on this will run on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.

Downtown co-ordinator Charity Dyke said the work that needs to be done here involves doing a second layer of asphalt, plus the crosswalks and mid-block crossings.

As well, crews will complete phase two of the project between 46th and 48th Streets and 51st to 52nd Streets. People can learn more about this phase on Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m.

This phase will see work get underway on the final three blocks on Little Gaetz Avenue.

“This involves the streetscaping and all the underground work . . . like the water mains,” said Dyke.

Dyke said designs will also be unveiled at the meetings on a new entrance feature at 52nd Street. As well, flower baskets and banners will be put up this year all along Little Gaetz Avenue.

Both meetings will be held at Scott Block at 4816 50th Ave.
