GARTH DAVIS: A multitude of priorities

For Liberal Party candidate Garth Davis, there isn’t just one important issue that needs to be brought to the forefront in the upcoming election; there’s a multitude, all of equal priority, he said.

From agriculture to more provisions for seniors to improving the quality of education, Davis said he wants to see a major turnaround for Alberta.

“Despite what many Albertans may think, voting Wildrose is not voting for change,” said Davis, running in the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills riding. “The real change is in what the Liberals can bring.”

In terms of property rights, the Liberal policy would take care of Bills 19, 24, 36 and 50: controversial and problematic bills for landowners, said Davis.

The Liberal Party still believes in the small family farm, added Davis, who farms a grain operation with his wife Maria, just on the outskirts of Olds. They have three children and three grandchildren.

Davis, 66, taught farm management at Olds College for 35 years before retiring last year.

“I’ve been an active voice in agriculture for numerous years,” he said. “I know a lot of people in Olds. I know the riding and issues here . . . That’s why people should vote for me.”

An educator himself, Davis’s wife and son are substitute teachers so he also understands the challenges in the education system from many angles, he said.

“Point blank our quality of education is going down,” he said. “It’s definitely not what it was 10 to 20 years ago.”

Davis said he would like to see school fees eliminated, more policies to support day care, and increased funds go to infrastructure for post-secondary institutions.

Making policy changes for increased efficiency when it comes to the ambulance and emergency room services in the province are also on his list.

Davis said three of his family members have been failed by Emergency Rooms and his brother died in an ambulance.

These are issues he genuinely cares about, he said.
