Gas line rupture forces brief evacuation

CALGARY — A three-storey apartment building and seven houses were briefly evacuated in Calgary after a contractor digging a hole for a deck ruptured a natural gas line.

Firefighters were on hand Tuesday with charged hose lines as a precaution in case the gas was ignited.

However, gas company officials were able to quickly clamp off the line.

Firefighters then went house to house with gas monitors to insure all homes were safe for the residents to return, which they did a short time later.
