Gasoline company surprised by cleanup order

CALGARY — An environmental protection order has been issued by the Alberta government to a fuel service company after thousands of litres of gasoline leaked from a Calgary gas station.

Alberta Environment has slapped the order on Gas Plus Inc. for allegedly failing to remediate contamination on and off the affected property in a northwest neighbourhood.

The leak was discovered in May and the provincial department was notified in August about a gasoline odour in the basement of a nearby home.

Gas Plus says upwards of 9,000 litres of gasoline escaped over several months through an opening the size of a pinhole, but that it responded as soon as the leak was discovered.

The company says it’s surprised by the order and cautions that it could be several months before a problem with lingering gasoline odours in area homes is resolved.

Gas Plus has been told it has until early March of next year to comply with the terms of the order.
