Generals sink the Admirals in three game sweep

Curtis Austring and Scoot Hood each notched two goals as the Bentley Generals sunk the Sylvan Lake Admirals 8-1 Saturday to complete a sweep of their best-of-three Chinook Hockey League semifinal.

Donald Morrison, Darryl LaPlane, Scott Doucet and Kevin Smyth also scored for the Generals before 525 fans at the Sylvan Lake Medican Multi-Plex. Ryan Carter tallied the lone goal for the Admirals, who trailed 2-0 after one period and 5-1 after 40 minutes and were assessed two of five minor penalties.

Scott Galenza stopped 19 shots for Bentley. Sylvan Lake netminder Jordan Ramstead made 59 saves.

The Generals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the series with a 5-2 win Friday at Bentley, where Morrison, LaPlante, Brandin Cote, Brandon Smith and Travis Brigley each scored once for the victors and Colby Albert and Chevan Wilson replied for the Admirals.

The clubs split 14 minor penalties, while Galenza made 21 saves and Ramstead stopped 30 shots.

In the other semifinal, the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs swept the Stony Plain Eagles with 6-3 and 4-3 wins. The second game was decided in overtime.

Vipers top Lightning

Chris Robertson and Cullyn Dunham each potted two goals for the Red Deer Vipers in a 5-3 Heritage Junior B Hockey League win over the Stettler Lightning Saturday at the Arena.

Adam McDavid also scored for the Vipers, who fired 37 shots at visiting netminder Simon Thieleman. Red Deer Jason Pohl goaltender looked at 29 shots.

Gavin Brandl, Cody Smitten and Reese Anheliger scored for Stettler, which trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-3 heading into the final frame. Red Deer was tagged with nine of 18 minor penalties.

In other weekend Heritage League games involving Central Alberta teams:

• The host Ponoka Stampeders got goals from Kevin Penner, Klais deWaal, Kenton Siegle and Tyler Poskus in an 8-4 loss Saturday to the High River Flyers.

Ponoka netminders Aaron Shukin and Garret Montour combined to make 34 saves as the Stamps were outshot 42-31.

• Elsewhere, the Three Hills Thrashers fell just short at Cochrane in a 5-4 loss to the Generals. Corbin Weston sniped a pair of goals for the Thrashers, with singles provided by Michael Stoetzel and Tyrel Severtson.

Outshot 45-31, the visitors got a 40-save performance from Devon Dell.

The Thrashers were 2-1 winners over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings Friday at Three Hills. Weston and Matt Wildeman scored for the hosts, while Cody Boeckman made 34 saves as the Thrashers held a 42-35 advantage in shots.

• The Lightning, with Brett Wold, Brett Ouellette and Cam Wright scoring in a losing cause, fell 6-3 to the host Airdrie Thunder Friday.

Stettler netminder made Landon Schmidt made 40 saves.
