OTTAWA — One of Glenn Gould’s beloved pianos is set to go on permanent display at the National Arts Centre later this month.

The centre has announced that Gould’s Steinway CD 318 will be unveiled to the public on June 20.

A permanent exhibition about Gould’s career will also include the prize-winning film “Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould.”

When Gould died in 1982, the piano and Gould’s folding chair were given by his estate to Library and Archives Canada. Earlier this year, the organization offered to transfer both items to the National Arts Centre.

Seventeen-year-old piano prodigy Jan Lisiecki — who is currently studying at Toronto’s Glenn Gould School of Music — is set to be the first to play the CD 318 in its new home.

While the piano will be permanently on display, the chair — customized by Gould’s father — will only be displayed on special occasions. The famed pianist took the chair around the world and used it for concerts and recording sessions.
