Government moves to limit debate on bills

Premier Alison Redford’s government has moved to limit debate in order to pass three key bills in the legislature.

EDMONTON — Premier Alison Redford’s government has moved to limit debate in order to pass three key bills in the legislature.

Her party has invoked rules for time-limited debate on new drunk driving rules, a bill to set up a health inquiry, and rules to set up a fixed election time period every four years.

Redford says the closure was necessary in order to pass the bills before the fall sitting of the legislature ends this week.

She says the bills need to go through because they reflect what Albertans want to see.

Opposition politicians have labelled the move undemocratic.
