CALGARY — A crew at Icon Stone and Tiling in Calgary got a huge surprise this week while unloading a crate that came in from China a month ago.

They spotted some gleaming eyes and upon inspection discovered a frightened and emaciated kitten.

Determined to rescue the kitty, staff tried coaxing her out with food and then removed 24 slabs of granite in an effort to get to her.

But in the end they called the Calgary Humane Society for help.

Humane society worker Maria Spina was able to grab the skinny feline and take her to safety.

Vets estimate the kitten is about six months old.

“We thought it was probably a little monkey from China,” said worker Ramon Garcia. “It was just amazing because we never thought we’d find a cat in a container full of slabs.”

The staff named the kitten Mandarin. The humane society says it will care for her and try to get her weight back up.
