LAKE LOUISE — Parks Canada says wildlife officers have had to destroy a grizzly that confronted two hikers on a trail in Banff National Park.

Officials say the six-year-old male bear had become a threat to the public.

The most recent encounter happened Monday when the bear followed hikers down the Fairview trail and then pursued them up a tree they had climbed to escape. No one was injured.

The collared bear was known to wildlife managers and parks personnel say they put in hundreds of hours trying to give it a chance.
