BARRIERE, B.C. — Four members of an Edmonton family have been killed in a head-on crash involving a tractor-trailer truck on Highway 5, north of Barriere, B.C.

RCMP say the family’s SUV lost control Wednesday night and slid across the highway into the path of the oncoming truck.

All four people inside the Suzuki Grand Vitara were killed, including a 47-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman, their seven-year-old son and three-year-old daughter.

Police say the family of four was heading south to California.

Staff Sgt. Steve Frayne says road conditions at the time of the crash were icy but typical for this time of year in the area.

No information will be released on the identities of the family members.

“It is a devastating reminder for drivers to exercise caution on the roadways and to ensure their vehicles are prepared for winter conditions,” Frayne said in a news release.
