High School football picks – September 8

Sylvan Lake Lakers (1-0) at Stettler Wildcats (1-0), 4:30 p.m. — The Lakers’ defence was the story in their opening season 9-8 win over the Lindsay Thurber Raiders while the ‘Cats put together a solid ground game to down Camrose. The fact this game is in Stettler, should give them a slight edge. Pick: Stettler.

Friday

Wetaskiwin Sabres (0-1) at Rocky Rebels (0-1), 4:30 p.m. — Rocky failed to score in their season opener at Lacombe, but Wetaskiwin looked shaky in a lopsided loss to Notre Dame. Pick: Rocky.

Camrose Trojans (0-1) at Notre Dame Cougars (1-0), 4:30 p.m. — The Cougars are young, but talented and are already playing with confidence after opening their season with win at Wetaskiwin. Camrose lost the majority of their top players last year and were lacking bodies in their opener. Pick: Notre Dame.

Lacombe Rams (1-0) at Hunting Hills Lightning (0-0), 7:30 p.m. — An interesting matchup. Lacombe has put together a solid program of late and Hunting Hills was undefeated last year. Still the Lightning are making their season opener while the Rams won 21-0 over Rocky. Pick: Lacombe.

2011 record: three right, one wrong .750

2010 record: 26 right, 10 wrong .722
