High water closes Sylvan trail

High lake water and heavy rains have forced closure of six blocks of a walking trail in Sylvan Lake.

High lake water and heavy rains have forced closure of six blocks of a walking trail in Sylvan Lake.

Susan Johnson, a spokeswoman for Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation, said on Tuesday afternoon that the trail has been closed between 33rd Street and 39th Street due to unsafe conditions.

The trail will remain closed until repairs can be made, she said.

“Sylvan Lake is experiencing above-average water levels and heavy rains, which are adversely affecting (Sylvan Lake Provincial Park) walking trail in low-lying areas.”

Johnson said severe wave and storm damage has washed away sections of the trail and flooded large portions of the trail in these locations.

The department will consult with the Town of Sylvan Lake to ensure that repairs and re-construction of the trail will fit into the present Lakeshore Drive re-development plan.
