Highway overpass sought to reduce mounting death toll at problem intersection

A fatal collision near a busy highway intersection east of Edmonton is sparking calls for construction of an overpass to prevent similar tragedies.

KITSCOTY — A fatal collision near a busy highway intersection east of Edmonton is sparking calls for construction of an overpass to prevent similar tragedies.

A 19-year-old woman was killed when a pickup truck she was in collided with a semi at the corner of highways 16 and 897 Sunday night.

A third vehicle was also involved in the Kitscoty-area crash, which left two other people in hospital.

Local resident Raven Luchinski says in the past seven years there have been six deaths at that location.

Kitscoty deputy mayor Brad Bogucky says for most of those years, local officials have been pressing the provincial government for an overpass to reduce the risk of accidents.

A government spokesman says long-term plans for the intersection call for an overpass, but admits the project is likely several years away.
